New Tourist is the first photography book produced by UMMMI., an artist who predominantly works with video. This series formed as UMMMI. suddenly found herself living in Australia through a personal relationship. The aim of these photographs was to capture her slow transition from being a stranger in new surroundings to becoming accustomed with Australian life. Australia provided intense feelings of happiness by being embraced into a new society. However the further into the real Australian culture she became the higher the hurdle felt to truly feel like an insider. With language as a barrier UMMMI. used her camera as proof of her existence. This book is about the journey after being tourist and her dealings with a new national identity.

映像作家のUMMMI.による初の写真集。このシリーズは彼女がパーソナルな関係性をオーストラリア出身の人と築いていくなか、突然その国で過ごすことになったことを元に作られた。これらの写真は彼女が単なる日本人観光客としてではなく、そのオーストラリア人を取り囲むコミュニティにゆっくりと少しずつ介入してゆく様子を収めたものとなっている。オーストラリアという新しい環境は強烈な幸福を彼女に与えたが、しかし同時にそのコミュニティに介入すればするほど、完全なオーストラリア人コミュニティの一員になることはできないという事実を彼女に実感させることとなる。言語はUMMMI.にとっての越えることの困難な壁となり、彼女にとってのカメラはその場に自分がなんとか存在していたことの証明となった。この本は、完全なる観光者とは少し違った国際間の境界線に存在することの自覚として、ニューツーリスト(新しい観光者)と名付けられたドキュメンタリー写真集である。
