UMI ISHIHARA 石原 海

I am a London and Tokyo based artist and filmmaker.

I create experimental narrative films that connect personal memories with social realities, focusing on the lived histories of marginalised communities. Being raised by parents working in nightclubs and the free-rave scene in Japan has shaped my focus on portraying communities existing outside the dominant social structure. I often collaborate with non-professional actors, local residents and people from my immediate surroundings. This unscripted, grassroots experience made me want to create cinema depicting lives that unfold outside of conventional society.

My work have been shown and screened in museums and film festivals worldwide, including The Centre Pompidou, ICA London, BFI Southbank, South London Gallery, International Film Festival Rotterdam, CPH:DOC, The National Museum of Art Osaka, Fukuoka Art Museum and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. I am selected Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2019 and Awarded GQ Global Creativity Awards 2024. Also directed work broadcasts on the BBC4 and Amazon Prime Original.

In 2022, I founded the art platform Flatline City to explore the possibilities of rave, education, and community.

Ongoing an Art Project: Flatline City

ロンドンと東京を拠点にする映画監督／アーティスト。

個人の記憶と社会問題を交差させ、周縁化された人々の生活史に光を当てる映像制作に取り組んでいる。その実践として、身近な人々や地域住民など、プロの役者ではない生活者たちと共に作品制作を行っている。

夜の仕事に携わる家庭環境で育ち、社会構造の外側にあるコミュニティを肌で感じてきた原体験が、メインストリームではない人々の生の営みを描いている制作の根幹にある。個人と社会の境界線上に存在する物語を発掘し、彼らの存在と抵抗を、多層的なナラティブとして記録することを目指している。

過去の作品は、東京都写真美術館、国立国際美術館、福岡市美術館、ポンピドゥー・センター、ICA ロンドン、BFI サウスバンク、サウスロンドン・ギャラリー、ルイ・ヴィトン財団美術館、ロッテルダム国際映画祭、CPH:DOC など、世界中の美術館や映画祭で上映・展示されている。2019年英国のアートアワードBloomberg New Contemporariesに選出、2021年資生堂アートエッグ選出、2024年GQ グローバル・ クリエイティブ・アワード受賞。

2018年、東京藝術大学先端芸術表現科卒業。リクルートスカラシップ、ポーラ美術振興財団、吉野石膏美術振興財団の助成を受け、2024年ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス校アーティストフィルム＆ムービングイメージ修了。
